"He's a little more personable than Gary was. How similar is Steve, the coach, to his dad, the coach? When Steve Campbell was the Norco quarterback, Chastain would go to games thinking Campbell was "humongous," a towering 6-foot-8 leader. "When I look across the field, it's going to feel like I'm playing my older brother." Like Dad "When you game plan for somebody, you're always trying to find a reason to not like that team, but this one is hard," Chastain said. It will be a cool moment for Gary Campbell to see. Chastain, who also played for Gary Campbell, was the quarterback on Norco's 1998 CIF championship team. Steve Campbell was unbeaten in his final two high schools seasons in 1992 and '93 for his dad, before playing at Arizona State. Steve Campbell and Chuck Chastain both played quarterback on three of Norco's California Interscholastic Federation football championship teams. They have a connection that dates back to the early 1980s when Chastain's dad was Gary Campbell's quarterback at Norco and Steve was the ball boy.
Next week, the guy Steve Campbell will be looking at across the field will be familiar: Chuck Chastain, Norco's fifth-year head coach. Two years ago, Norco played host to Mesa Desert Ridge. Next season, Norco, which plays elite programs from California and those that come in from out of state, will be playing out of state for the first time, visiting Williams Field. We thought we could put a two-year block together, scheduling them."
We want to set the foundation of this program. "It’s about Williams Field going out of state for the first time. "This game is not about me or my dad coaching there," Campbell said. What makes this Zero Week game even more special is that it will be played on Gary Campbell Field, which was named after Steve's father, who led Norco for 31 years, building it into one of the greatest California programs.
Two years ago, Campbell led Williams Field to its first state championship, taking down mighty Peoria Centennial in the final. It's the mark of an established, elite program, to travel out of state for games. 17, when the season opens, it will mark the first time the Black Hawks have ever played a football game outside of Arizona. Steve Campbell is going home, but he said his trip next week to Norco, Calif., isn't about him, but Gilbert Williams Field and everybody he ever coached at the school since it began playing varsity games 10 years ago.
